Former NASW Montana Executive Director, Sharon Hanton, Critically Injured in Accident, But Recovering
Sharon Hatton, a former NASW Montana Executive Director was very seriously injured this past summer. Bill Evans, a member in Helena has kept abreast of Sharon’s situation, and her husband sent the following message to Bill about her condition.
“After spending 116 days in six hospitals, [Sharon] is out and recuperating at her daughter's home in Chaska, MN. She has been doing physical therapy three times per week since November 8th and continues to slowly progress after she left Sister Kenney in Minneapolis.
She was DEEPLY touched by the good wishes and the flowers that NASW sent her during her multiple hospital stays. Always good to be remembered, especially for Sharon. She would always appreciate phone calls because Sharon loves to talk (no surprise to anyone). Her phone number is (406) 580-8419. The plan is to stay in Minneapolis until after the Holiday Season, and then return to Bozeman in early January.
Her present mailing address is:

Thank you again to you and the NASW members for all of your prayers, good wishes, and concerns.”

Kelly Smith, a member from Great Falls expressed her concerns about her student loans and asked about a House Resolution recently introduced to address this issue. About this same time President Obama announced his plan to reduce the burden of student loans. NASW has written a blog about what the Administration’s loan forgiveness plan means for social workers. NASW Montana Announces 3rd Annual NASW Student Scholarship Sponsorship Program
Did you know?
- Although Montana now has five Undergraduate and Graduate Social Work Schools and Programs, with a combined enrollment of nearly 350 students, NASW-Montana student members dramatically decreased from 2005-2011?
- The average NASW Montana member is over 51 years and has been a member for nearly 11 years?
Did you also know that since our NASW Student Scholarship Sponsorship program began in 2009 that:
- Our members have sponsored 69 student memberships?
- Today, nearly 20% of our Chapter’s membership is students and transitional (post graduate) members?
Your Montana Chapter has been conducting a very successful Social Work Student Scholarship Campaign. As a result our NASW Montana Student Membership Recruitment Drive we have been bringing in the next generation of Montana Social Workers!
Your NASW Montana Membership Committee is asking you, one of our loyal regular members, to consider “sponsoring” a Social Work Student’s NASW membership for 1 year! The cost to you would be only $48, or about ¼ the cost of a regular NASW membership and your Social Work Student receives all the benefits of full NASW membership!
Moreover, only student members can take advantage of NASW’s generous Transitional Member rates for 3 years! If you graduate before joining NASW, you have to pay the regular membership rate of $190.
Like regular members, half of the student’s membership dues support your Montana Chapter. Your Montana Chapter is committed to being our Social Workers’ foremost “COMMUNITY OF PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT.” We want them to reap the benefits of local membership and help the Montana Chapter continue to be a strong fighter for our profession!
How can I sponsor a social work student’s NASW membership…It’s simple! Please let us know if want to sponsor a Montana Social Work Student’s NASW membership. If so, we will “match” you with a student, preferably one close to where you live. We will provide you with the student’s name, email address and phone number if you want. We will ask you to send us a check for $48 made out to NASW and we will forward the student’s application and your check to NASW. This fall we will start again, with our 2011-12 campaign.
Please click on the following link to open your NASW Student Member Pledge form.
Please consider participating in this “win-win” opportunity for our social work students, members, and our Chapter.
Thanks so much for your consideration.

NASW MT Comments to Licensing Board

This letter was signed by Michael Hagenlock, NASW MT Board Chair, and Kim Gardner, Clinical Supervision Task Force Chair.
Licensing Board Letter Main Points
- NASW MT supports New Rule #1 Supervisor Qualifications, and looks forward to working with the board in the development of the “20 clock hours of board-approved training [curriculum] in clinical supervision.”
- Work with Licensing Board to develop legislation to create a Licensed Masters in Social Work, or LCSW “in training” license category.
- Amended definition of “supervisor” impact on LCSW’s licensed under this standard and the impact on the “transferability” of their licenses to other states. (LCSW out of state endors 11.29.11)
